The Human Givens approach is based on the idea that all forms of mental distress arise when our essential needs are not fully met. These needs, the ‘givens’ of human nature, include both physical needs, like food, water, warmth, and shelter, and emotional needs, such as security, social connection, intimacy, autonomy, competence, and a sense of purpose.
We are born with innate resources to help meet these needs, including the ability to connect with others, empathise, problem-solve, plan, imagine, and reflect on our circumstances. When important needs remain unmet or resources aren’t fully used, mental and physical health can be affected, leading to issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, addictions, phobias, or panic attacks.
Human Givens practitioners work by identifying what is missing in a person’s life, helping to restore balance, and teaching practical coping skills. The aim is to support people to feel more confident, resilient, and fulfilled in their lives.
